Have you never placed something in the freezer and not wrapped properly? It turns grey in colour and is spoilt through freezing.
A 'fridge keeps things at constant temperature rather than to cold-

presumably cos it is too warm to keep it fresh in the igloo, and if they leave the food outside it will freeze or get eaten by polar bears
